More than 100 million landmines are reportedly buried in the ground around the world.
(1)[Even though they were set during a time of war, they still remain even after peace has been declared. After the war, people come back to their homes, and they frequently become the victims of landmines.]
The International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL),launched in 1992,is coordinated by a staff of eight and a committee of thirteen organizations.
The work of the ICBL has brought about tremendous change in a short period of time.
In Ottawa,in December 1997,122 countries signed a treaty that bans the use, production, stockpiling, and transfer of antipersonnel mines.
To date, over 140 countries have signed and 117 countries have ratified the Mine Ban Treaty.
Chris Moon is one individual who served as a volunteer to (2)[remove] landmines.
Clearing buried mines is exhausting work¡¼they must be located, one by one,and taken apart with extreme care.
He carried out this mine-sweeping work for three years in Cambodia and Mozambique.
Then, while trying to remove a landmine,he mistakenly stepped on it and lost his right arm and right leg.
But he did not give up.
He started a campaigh to collect money to fund a campaign to ban landmines.
To advertise the campaign,he would run long distances ( A )his handicap.
A year after the accident,he ran in the London Marathon.
And he was one of the runners to carry the torch for the Nagano Winter Olympic Games in 1998.
